Cocoon Tribeca Tree Weave

We did this net loft installation for Cocoon NYC, a membership based community hub with programming for kids and adults, and everything was designed mid-pandemic to be very Covid-Friendly. The installation is located at 316 Greenwich St in Tribeca, near the World Trade Center. If you’re in New York City you can go check the net out—it’s actually visible from the street through the storefront window.

This is a large installation with much surface area to explore, climb and support many people for gatherings or meetings. The net has multiple floors, so different classes or functions can be happening simultaneously. The astroturf floor makes the experience under the net soft and plush. We did not install the astroturf, we did work with the technicians to coordinate on the timing of our drilling bolts and then giving them time to install astroturf before we pinned the floor down with our netting.

To build this indoor net installation we bolted into the wall and floor with a hammer drill and ultra-strong glue-in bolts made for rock climbing and highlining. We created 3 levels of triangular platforms in cream and the gradient slope between the levels in goldenrod and solar orange for a sunrise effect. The raised platforms allow for the under side of the net to be utilized for climbing or hanging things off of, like a swing or an art exhibit. Toddlers are constantly scurrying around in the under space.

The clawfoot ramp leads into cocoon’s kitchen and provides a second portal entrance and exit to the woven playground. The W shaped net opens into a little play area with street views of New York City.

The expansiveness of the net makes it a little bouncier than a smaller net installation. The size also allows for many people to be together on the net. There are lots of stretching options here with the wide open floor plan of this indoor woven playground. For stretching inspiration see the photos below of our yoga teacher weaver Vinny Bonanno utilizing the net as a prop for embodiment.
