Westlake Tree Weave
The Westlake Tree Weave is a Mono Tree Net located in Austin, Texas. The tree net playground is built solely into one beautiful live oak tree, and has a cool ramp coming off it in a signature Tree Weaves style which attaches to the back deck off the house. You can actually see this unique piece of usable, abstract art from the kitchen, dining room, and living room of the home, and the family really enjoys looking out at the net as a joyous piece of art that lights up both their exterior and interior spaces.
I remember while building this net, a couple days into the installation the daughter was already reading on the tree net in the mornings before school, before it was even finished, and the mother told me secretly that her son was excited that he was probably going to be the coolest kid in the neighborhood once the net was completed. These types of little, secretive compliments really go a long way to make us feel fulfilled in our work, and we carry them a long ways. I’m not sure which of these honorific anecdotes was most flattering, but on the last day the father of the family told me that he was really surprised to discover what a piece of fine art he had commissioned. “I thought I was just getting a cool playful climbing structure in my tree, but this is the type of thing I’d be thrilled to see at a museum; it’s a true one of a kind piece of fine, abstract art. Well done.”
This tree net is made of some small, sloped areas that are perfect for hanging out, lounging, and enjoying the outdoors. The net perfectly highlights the shapes of the tree branches with its Floating V Panels, and the large, curving oblique branches themselves turn into benches you can sit or lay on, or lean back against. The tree net features an alternative entrance/exit portal in the bottom crotch of the tree, where you can climb in our out using climbing holds we expertly installed in the tree trunk. Why take the stairs up to the back porch after playing soccer or swimming in the pool when you can climb up a tree trunk rock climbing wall and over an arching tree net to get back in the house?
