GDS Stairwell B

In addition to the Rainbow Whorls Stairwell Sculpture at the Georgetown Day School (GDS) in Washington D.C., Tree Weaves was asked to install a second installation at another stairwell located at the school. As with the Rainbow Whorls Sculpture, the second stairwell sculpture at GDS was built to act as a fall/suicide prevention net as well as an aesthetically beautiful piece of art.

This paracord art sculpture in the second stairwell serves as a fall protection barrier in case someone was to accidentally or intentionally fall from the staircase. The spiral pattern of the paracord creates a net-like structure that can help to catch someone who falls from the staircase, potentially preventing serious injury or even death. Each individual strand of paracord in the installation is rated to hold 550 pounds, providing plenty of strength to support a falling body.

The use of paracord in this way is a unique and creative approach to fall protection that is both functional and visually appealing. The spiral pattern of the paracord creates a sense of movement and flow, which can help to reduce stress and anxiety for those who view it. At the same time, the installation provides an important safety feature that can help to prevent accidents and promote well-being in a school environment.

Overall, the installation is a great example of how art can be used to promote safety and well-being in a school environment. The use of paracord and the spiral pattern is a unique and creative approach that serves a practical purpose while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the space.
