Topanga Fallen Tree Weave
This unique tree net installation is located at an extremely private and luxurious Airbnb in Topanga Canyon, CA, just east of Malibu. Creatively, this was one of the more interesting pieces we’ve been commissioned, because it was done entirely between the trunks of a large tree that had fallen into the canyon. After realizing the main root structure was still intact, the client added extra metal supports to the foundation of the tree to ensure its stability, and we came in and wove a multi-level, multi-dimensional hang out area. The space is a perfect nook for couples to relax in, have picnics in, and watch the sunset over Topanga Canyon. It also features a playful hangout for kids in the lower section.
Another unique aspect of this piece are the funneling webs we created to ensure the weave is fully safe. Adding an immense amount of style and pizzazz, these bowl-like additions cascade off the end of the fallen tree net, providing a safe alternative to walls. We normally wall in all of our nets, but at the end of the horizontal tree trunks, there were no supports for us to rig our webbed walls off of. So we thought: “why not create a tub-like structure, so that as you progress to the infinity edge of the tree net, you can just drop into this sunken area that is fully safe and walled in, rather than having this flat fall risk?” So that’s what we did. It turned out to be super safe, very visually striking and beautiful, and each of the two vortex-like funnel tubs is an incredibly comfortable cocoon-like sac for 1-4 people to lounge/cuddle in. We really liked the end result!
This epic Californian tree net is mostly used for the private Airbnb guests to enjoy amongst themselves, but the property also hosts meditation ceremonies, and talks from special guests during some of the owners exclusive events. Our crew got to stay in this truly magnificent tiny home Airbnb for about 10 days while we created this stunning tree net piece. It really was such an oasis . The house itself is really stunning, cozy and nice, with a fully usable kitchen. It’s up a beautiful windy mountain Topanga road. The property is rich with little trails that lead to secret seating nooks surrounded by cacti, huge crystals, and nice plants. But the best feature (besides our space net of course) is the amazing saltwater infinity pool, which also features one of the comfiest hot tubs we’ve ever come across. Spending your evenings sitting in this tub underneath the beautiful trees, looking out at Topanga Canyon, after lounging in our beautiful Tree Weave all day, is quite a lovely way to spend a vacation. This tree net uses 17 spools of Dark Green webbing. We wanted the piece to blend in with the surrounding nature, and the dark green also contrasts beautifully with the silver color of the fallen Eucalyptus tree.
