Silver Lake Tree Weave

Nestled high up in the hills of the trendy Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, lies a web elegantly suspended between the branches of a truly beautiful rubber tree.

The clients originally contacted us in large part due to a safety concern they had on the land. They have a couple children, and their Silver Lake property slopes steeply upward to a narrow ledge at the top of their land. They had landscaped a path to a beautiful breakfast nook at the top of this area, in classic LA outdoor-living style, but there was no way for them to block off the edge of the precipice from being a severe, 30’ fall risk. We brainstormed a myriad of solutions to safely help them block off steep slope, and we’re quite proud that what we came up with ultimately turned out to be an epic, multi level, multi room tree net. Looking at it, you wouldn’t even realize that the tree web structure was originally designed as a safety feature to enclose the top of the LA hillside. We did successfully design this tree net to completely seal the opening coming off the breakfast nook, as well as having 3 separate entrances into the completely private and enclosed tree net, which actually floats quite high above the ground, due to the grade of the Silver Lake hill and the overhanging nature of the rubber tree.

The Tree Weave itself features a few different, distinguished hang out areas. One is a super low blue bowl at the bottom. Another is an elevated, enclosed red and pink love nest/perch, at the high point of the tree web. There is also the woven palm of the rubber tree, a side annex suspended from a horizontal branch, as well as a flat entry area you can lounge on that is woven to the concrete fence posts at the border of their property. This tree net doesn’t feature any large bounce rooms, as we focused primarily on creating a multidimensional, climbing and exploratory space with plenty of space to lounge, as well as because of the design constraints defined by the safety parameters we were contracted to meet. Nonetheless, this tree web is a superb addition to the Silver Lake neighborhood and community and we know Los Angeles is thrilled to have yet another one of our incredible, bespoke tree nets in a new neighborhood of the city. We hope this brings us some more business in the hip LA enclave. Please give us a call if you have a property in Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, or any of the surrounding East LA neighborhoods and want to have us come over and do a free, onsite consultation.

The property hosting this tree web functions as a sort of intentional community, with many individual dwellings for separate families, shared art and music studios, and beautiful community oriented outdoor spaces, now including the epic tree net we wove at the top of their hill. The colorful, rainbow clad property was also incredibly accommodating when it came to adding color to this tree web, so we made the net out of Blue, Red, and Fuchsia tubular webbing. This gives the net a really hyper realistic pop that we absolutely loved. This motif low-key reminded us of Sailor Moon once the tree net was complete.

Silver Lake Travel Guide

Our favorite places to eat and drink in and around Silver Lake during this installation are as follows:

  • Surawon

    • This is the best location to get Soon, the amazing tofu soup locally popularized by BCD Tofu House. Surawon is lesser known, more low-key, but a considerable cut above the other restaurants specializing in Soon in terms of food quality. We eat at Surawon constantly and cannot recommend it enough to anyone in the LA area.

    • Must try: LA Galbi combo, with traditional Beef Soon soup. We also recommend the black tofu and purple rice alterations.

    • Surawon Tofu House

  • Sqirl

    • Amazing breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee. Super hip, place to catch a solid glimpse into the local Silver Lake culture, with very good quality food and drink. They also have a highly well curated bodega for strange wines and other goods-you-didn’t-know-you-needed.

    • Sqirl

  • All Time

    • Similar style cafe to Sqirl, no bodega, better outdoor area, a little north in the Los Feliz area.

    • All Time

  • Special Hot Dog

  • Courage Bagels

    • This place is so hype and (almost) always has a huge line out the door, so it took forever for us to try this place. Fortunately one day we wandered up when there was virtually no line, and after we got our food, this place instantly became a favorite. I rarely say this, but this place is worth the hype. Easily the best bagels I’ve ever had. Anyone who thinks LA can’t compete with New York in the bagel realm, has to go to Courage in Silver Lake.

  • Doubting Thomas

    • Very similar to Sqirl, Doubting Thomas is a local Echo Park scene with incredible food, drinks, and vibes. Absolutely a must try for breakfast. As someone who has spent time living in the South, Doubting Thomas has better biscuits than you will get anywhere in the Carolinas.

  • Holbox

    • This is a high end, chef-forward, ultra hype, order at the counter Mexican sea food spot inside a greater food hall full of other, solid and worth-trying Mexican places. If you like Uni, or really any other type of high end seafood, from their raw bar to their fish tacos, Holbox is hands down one of the best restaurants in all of LA. Go not during regular meal times to avoid long lines and parking mayhem.

  • Kettl Tea

    • This is a niche matcha only shop around East Hollywood/Los Feliz. Everything is on point, but the real easter egg at Kettl is their obscene $14 matcha popsicle. We splurged and, yes, it was well worth every penny.
